A recent press release from the Quileute Nation has highlighted a very disturbing set of recent events. According to them, one Twilight fan took anticipation for The Twilight Saga: New Moon a little too far.
Says the release, "A Twilight fan visiting Quileute from Georgia was rescued from an island they surmised could be the location where the main character Bella Swan goes cliff diving in the 2nd book of the Twilight saga New Moon."
The Quileute Nation, however, has spoken up on the matter, stating that while the "Quileute Nation has been very welcoming of all visitors to La Push," it "does not condone behavior that could result in bodily harm to anyone visiting this beautiful land. We understand the eagerness of fans to seek out every detail that is a part of the story, but please remember this is a work of fiction."
The fan was saved by the Coast Guard in a full-scale rescue mission on Tuesday, July 14.
This event serves as an extremely important reminder of the care that needs to be taken by fans of the Twilight or any other series. It is all too tempting, at times, to forget that there is a limit to what we truly can experience for ourselves. We don't need a warning sign on our fiction novels, do we?
With the Quileute Days festival forthcoming this weekend, one can only hope this is an isolated and un-repeated incident and that attendants of the festival are careful and respectful of La Push and the Quileute Nation during their stay.
